Biotechnology Laboratory

CETEC’s biotechnology laboratory was created after more than ten years of research into biopolymers production, and characterisation.

At CETEC we have a biotechnology pilot plant able to provide a small but scalable production of biopolymers.

Synthesis of a modulable range of biobased and biodegradable polyester PHBV

CETEC offers a PHBV range. We can modulate the properties of the PHBV biopolymer through the adaptation of the fermentative process conditions and feedstock concentrations. Our Biotechnology Department produces PHBV biopolyester from industrial wastes by microorganisms

We have a complete laboratory ready to produce biopolymers and work with different microorganisms thanks to our custom-made and tailored bioreactors. Our laboratory has the following:

  • Incubators for 500 ml and 1 l flasks
  • Biological safety cabinet
  • 5L bioreactor
  • 30L bioreactor
  • Various 100 L custom-made bioreactors
  • Freezers -40ºC for conservation of strains
  • Freeze dryer

CETEC has a complete laboratory for the biosynthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), their extraction and purification, as well as the characterisation of thermal, mechanical, rheological, optical, and barrier properties of PHAs.

We are actually working on the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates, or PHAs. Our focus is on making PHAs competitive in terms of sustainability, performance and cost.

We are developing a line of waste valorisation as a feedstock for this biotechnological process. For that purpose, we work closely with regional agri-food companies for the supply of industrial solid wastes for the exploitation of these wastes as feedstock for the biotechnological production of bioplastics.
